Dry Needling for Low Back Pain and Sciatica

A 33-year-old lady presented with low back pain and right leg pain (sciatica) since the last 2½ years. Clinical examination and MRI of her spine confirmed disc prolapse at 2 levels (L4-5 & L5 S1). She used to be an active person who worked in the armed forces and would regularly jog for 5-10 km daily. She had been to pain management specialists and had undergone epidural steroid injections thrice in the last 2 years. But the relief was only temporary and she was unable to sit or stand for more than 20 minutes. She had taken early retirement from the army and was preparing for her civil services examination. Because of her pain, she was forced to study in the lying down position as she was unable to sit up for long.

Being a young lady who was looking forward to a bright career ahead of her, she was feeling dejected and left wondering when and how she would be able to achieve her dreams. She was referred to me by an acquaintance who had benefited from dry needling for a similar problem. Although she was living in Bangalore, she flew down to Delhi for 2 weeks to undergo a course of dry needling sessions. At the end of 5 sessions, she had 80% relief in her symptoms, she was able to sit and stand for longer periods and started her 5 km walks as well.

Two months later, her leg pain had been totally relieved. She had some residual back pain and she flew down again to Delhi to for another course of dry needling sessions.

She is very satisfied with the treatment of dry needling and the benefit it has had on her low back pain and sciatica.
